ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - when implantation can happen?

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 11/17/2005

Question
What is the time frame when implantation can happen? What are the signs of it if any? How long after it takes place with a positive result come up on a blood or pregnancy test?

Answer
After fertilization of the egg, the fertilized egg travels back through the fallopian tube towards the uterus for implantation into the wall of the uterus. This takes approximately 8 days. Some women notice some "implantation bleeding' and some do not. A pregnancy test will not show a positive result until 14-21 days after conception (10 days for a blood test). The best time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your next period. The earliest symptoms of pregnancy are breast tenderness, fatigue, and nausea. Good Luck.
