ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - large yolk sac

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 10/3/2005

Question
I'm 26 y/o. I have 2 boys. The first day of my last period was 07/29/05.

I had an ultrasound done this past week and I was told the yolk sac is larger than it is supposed to be and I should prepare myself for a possible miscarriage. I was told the baby is very healthy and the heart rate is 167 bpm. The baby was moving around. However, when I got home I received a call from an Ob telling me that the sac is a little on the larger side, but not to worry. I'm having another ultrasound this Wednesday. How is it that the results can say both of these things? How do I (on one hand) prepare myself to lose my pregnancy? Yet I'm told not to worry. Which is right... is there a concern?

Thanks,
Pam

Answer
If your last period started on July 29, you are now 9 weeks 1 day pregnant. By now, a sonogram should show a fetus and a fetal heartbeat, and it does not matter if the gestational sac is larger or smaller than what is usually seen. At the next sonogram, there should be adequate growth of the fetus, and as long as there is still a good FH and good growth, there is nothing you need to worry about.
