ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - medicine while breastfeeding

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 10/15/2005

Question
Hello, my question is pretty simple. My wife is breastfeeding our 6 month old son and this month she is having a very painful menstrual cycle. Lots of cramping and sore back. She wants to know if taking midol would be ok and still be able to feed baby.

Answer
There are two types of Midol: one contains acetominofen (Tylenol) plus caffeine, and one contains naproxyn plus caffeine. Both are safe during breastfeeding. You should be aware that caffeine sometimes causes cystic breasts. However, it is not dangerous or harmful to the baby with breastfeeding.
