Question
I would like to know how to find a good ob/gyn around the Indianapolis, IN area, who is okay with the fact that I take herbs for my health.  It is important to me that my doctor works with my herbalist.  Are there any specific names of doctors, or suggestions for how to find them?

Answer
Dear Karen,

There is a website that provides you with basic professional information on almost every licensed physician in the USA. It is the AMA DoctorFinder website. This will be a good start for you.

After that, my best results has ALWAYS come from word of mouth from people whose judgement I trust. I just practiced this very thing yesterday! I had to go to a larger city - actually chose to go to the larger city - for some heart testing. I am not at all familiar with the heart docs there, so I "hypothetically" asked the nurse who she would send her family to and who she'd stay away from and why (because I knew she might have a conflict with a direct recommendation by virtue of her working relationship with them all). I got names of three with glowing recommendations that I will be more than comfortable seeing if need be.

I would suggest asking your herbalist if he/she has had any experience working with any OB/GYNs in your area and if so, if there is any good (or bad) recommendation. Or even go to one of the larger herbal stores and speak with a female employee or fellow shopper there. Strike up a conversation and tell them you are new to the area and are interested in choosing a doctor who will work with the herbalist. You would be surprised the kind of information you will find out that way!

You should also contact your state medical board and make sure there are no past or current complaints or grievances against any doctor you finally choose.

I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.

Expertise

I have been an R.N. since 1988 and come from a family of nurses. I have clinical experience in labor and delivery, as well as post-partum care and pre-term pregnancy complications. I have also worked in Community Health Clinics dealing with this area of expertise, including WIC (Women, Infant, & Children) clinics performing nursing evaluations and assessments in determining a need for services or intervention for pregnant women, newborns, and young children. I have worked in immunization clinics in and around my community as well. I also have several years experience in OB and Pediatric Home Care Nursing. In addition to that, I am a mother of two, ages 21 and 16, both of which I had hoped would be vaginal deliveries, but ended up being C-Sections... one of which had me in pre-term labor...another which was frank breech (bottom first)... one who rejected the breast... and so on... to list my personal experience would be a bit lengthy! I'd simply like to help anyone who might have a question or concern that I can draw on my expertise to answer!
