ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - when to start classes

Expert: Cheri Purpur - 8/4/2004

Question
Hello,
I am approximately 20 weeks pregnant with my first baby. My husband and I are interested in taking birth classes, which are offered locally in 6-week sessions, as well as some type of breathing class (Lamaze or other). My first question is, when is a good time to take the classes? We don't want to take them too early, but certainly don't want to wait too late. Also, do you have any advice on choosing a breathing method? I would very much like to try a natural birth, and keep hearing that Lamaze is still the best. Thank you! Your comments are appreciated.

Answer
Hello Heather- thank GOODNESS you are going to take classes- you would not believe the number of questions I get from people who obviously did NOT take classes. I do not agree that Lamaze is best- I recommend the Bradley Method of breathing and relaxation. I have taught both kinds and used both myself- Bradley is best. Find out about your nearest Bradley instructor by going to the Bradley Childbirth website. These classes may be more expensive, but MORE than worth it. They will suggest to you when to start AND they allow you to continue attending classes even when you are finished the course right up to delivery so you can stay on top of things. Hope that helps- Cheri.
