ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - taking Diflucan one during pregnancy

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 2/23/2005

Question
I am 32 years of age and have 2 children.I am currently 9weeks pregnant with my third child and have a question in regard to taking Diflucan one whilst pregnant. I didnt realize i was pregnant at the time and took Diflucan one 150 mg ,i was approximately 2 weeks pregnant at the time .I am really worried about the potential damage that this may have caused my baby and would appreciate some information as to what problems could possibly arise.Thank you very much in taking the time to read this email i look forward to your reply.Regards Kristen Webster

Answer
Although the data are very limited, the use of fluconazole (Diflucan) during the first trimester appears to be teratogenic with continuous daily doses of 400mg/day or more. The published experience with the use of smaller doses, such as those prescribed for vaginal fungal infections, suggests that the risk for adverse outcomes is low, if it exists at all. I doubt that your use of Diflucan once when you were two weeks pregnant will cause any problems at all.
