ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - taking motrin

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 10/17/2005

Question
I am 31 years old, with one child (22 month old daughter). My LMP
was Sep 18, just took an HPT and it came back positive (I would not
even be 4 weeks yet, as I did not ovulate until day18). I pulled my
back out last night and am in a lot of pain. Can I take motrin this
early in the pregancy as the placenta is not even formed yet? Or
should I not risk it? Are there ANY anti-inflammatories I can take?

Answer
We do not recommend using Ibpuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Ponstal, Anaprox, Aspirin) during pregnancy. It can cause bleeding and causes the premature closure of the ductus arteriosus in the fetus. If you pulled yoour back out last night, it would be better to use Tylenol or Tylenol with codeine during pregnancy.
