ObGyn/Pregnancy issues - white spot on babies heart

Expert: Lawrence Jay Rappaport M.D. - 12/19/2004

Question
I am 38 weeks pregnant. My last us was when I was 20weeks. My AFP test was negative for DS on scale
1-11,000 the baby looks fine on us all the measurements were normal by Dr. saw a spot or 2 on babies heartbut she said that I have nothing to worry about because she doesn't see anything abnormal and my AFP was negative. Have you ever
seen babies born that had the same white spot?
Were they fine?
             -Aggie

Answer
There are many spots that we see on sonogram that mean absolutely nothing. They are artifacts of the echoes and, unless they are related to some syndrome or disease, you can ignore them. If the outflow tracts of the heart were fine and there are no other abnormalities, there is no reason for concern. The baby will, of course, be evaluated after birth for any problems. Good Luck.
