Question Hi, I have an old Boosey oboe that was my grandmothers, and which I haven't played for 35 years. I am contemplating lending it long term to a young beginner. First though, I want to be sure it is not wildly valuable (unlikely) or so old as to be a waste of time getting it seviced. It is stamped Boosey & Co Ltd 28271, are you able to tell me anything?
Thanks.
Answer Hello Susi,
Boosey and Hawkes produced oboes till the 1930’s or so, then they merged the instrument and sheet music divisions and became a music publisher, signing some of the most well known and emerging musical voices of the early twentieth century.
Boosey and Hawkes do not have a complete serial number list, so trying to date your instrument will be very difficult. I am assuming that it is an open-hole instrument; it probably looks more like a clarinet than an oboe so the cost of service should not be too high.
I am sorry that I could not tell you any more about your oboe.
