Subject: C too sharp

Question
I have just got a new instrument and the C  in the 1st and 2nd octave was over
adjusted and is too sharp. Do you think this is able to be completely fixed by
just filling in the tone hole a bit?

Answer
Dear David

A good repairman will be able to tune the C's down without too much of a problem. It is usually a matter of filling the hole a little; although the shape is crucial.

Have you tried different reeds with narrower staples perhaps. This sometimes brings down the C. If you are really bright on the C in comparison to the B and the A however, then a bit of hole work will affect things equally - both normal and with the octave key.

What sort of oboe is it and who do you think you could take it to for the work to be done.

Choose with care!! If you are in the UK I can certainly advise you if you need that.

Best wishes with it

Geoffrey
