Answer
Subject: Engine Oil Odor

Question: Is it a hazard to work in a shop which has a strong engine oil based odor? My friend does not believe it is - I disagree.  Who is right? Thank you – Marianne

Answer: I apologize but I cannot answer this question.  There are too many items unknown.  I would need to know the specifics on the oil(s) being used including having a copy(ies) of all of the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for review, the size of the space, the layout, the airflow, all other ventilation related data, the times and amounts of exposure and most importantly the results or air sampling over a representative period of time, and other data.  I would recommend that this is a question which requires the involvement of a certified industrial hygienist.  Possibly the firm that provides your workers compensation insurance could provide some expertise in this matter.  Sorry that I can’t provide more but hope this will give you a place to start.  – Michael Brown, CSP Retired
