Occupational (OSHA) and Environmental Hazards - fiberglass dust

Expert: Sandy Brown, CHSP - 11/3/2009

Question
Routing and cutting fiberglass for eight hours a day, and being in contact with fiberglass dust breathing it and having it on ones entire body. What are the hazards of long term exposer? What does a company need to provide for protection.

Answer
Hi Jack,
You want to stop this immediately! Fiberglass is GLASS and that's what you are putting directly into your lungs.  You may not suffer ill effects immediately, but in a short while you could develop a life-threatening disease.

In order to protect yourself, you should be wearing a respirator that is appropriate to fiberglass.  Please do not work another minute without this protection.

I wish you all the best.
Sandy
