Occupational (OSHA) and Environmental Hazards - bodyshop

Expert: Sandy Brown, CHSP - 7/29/2009

Question
I work in a bodyshop . We have mentioned to our employer about the obvious unsafe environment . We have a paint booth but not exhaust fans in the body shop so the dust is always in the air , open sewage lines that leak into the shop sometimes , where a toilet was removed , where we wash cars , employees have been shocked by the power outlet ( extension cords are used and only available plug is in wash bay . )because they are not GFCI . we had an airline explode recently which could have harmed someone , they are all pvc . yes pvc does not hold up well to compressed air . there are so many things . Just wondering what can be done ? The goal isnt to get my employer fined because it could cost him his business , just wondering what can be done ? thank you

Answer
Hi Ryan,
This is a complex problem with a complex solution.  You need to hire a safety consultant to come in to inspect your workplace and make recommendations for change.  You are working in a very dangerous environment.

What state are you in?  Perhaps I could make some further recommendations to you.

All my best,
Sandy
