Regarding: Heavy Duty Lubricants(HDMO), Passenger Car Lubricants(PCMO), Hydraulics, Greases, Gear OIls. Applications, Substitution, Constituants, and general knowldge of the aforementioned products. Not well versed in the actual manufacture of petrochemical products, but can answer general questions. I have a vast network of information sources within the Petrochemical Industry (Not too much on fuels). If I don`t know the answer, I can usually find one rather quickly. Question
I have people I  know who use synthetic and swear by it.  Others who sat it is a colossal waste of $.  I am about to get a cherokee with 4L inline motor.  Have considered a transmission cooler added to the engine to increase the sump capacity and get more bang for the buck than synthetic.  This used to be popular with air/iol cooled VW Aluminum/magnesium engines.  Which do you think is the better choice.  In this economy I need to keep the old gal running as long as possible

Having owned a 1961 Karman Ghia for many years I know just what your talkinf about on the cooler. Make sure though that you place the cooler in such a way that the hot air does not affect the water cooling system. Some people put it in front of the radiator allowing the hot air from the trans cooler to impact the water radiator resulting in some possible problems.
Sometimes a remote mount with a Hadees electric fan fastened to the cooler works well. Always carry enough repair hose and clamps just in case. ANd of course fluid as well.
Regarding the synthetic oil, most of what you hear is marketing hype on this. THe best usage for a synthetic is to utilize its pour point (ability to flow) at extremely low temps. So, if your in Mc Murdo station, Antartica it would be good. But, for everyday use in a normal older vehicle it would be a waste of money.
Extended drain intervals are nice for the oil, however you still have to change the filter at least every 3 or 6000 miles to get rid of the debris. Most people don't and they start to have problems.
Use a reputable name brand oil at you needed viscosity, change it every 3000 miles (I know, every one says longer, but older vehicles need tender loving care) including the air filter and you should be just fine. Regarding the "Racers Edge" (I hate that term) After each race they rebuild the engine! So whats the point? Unless you own a rebuild shop.
