Oil/Gas - old oil lease
Expert: Laura M. FitzGerald, CPL - 10/23/2009
Question I have a copy of an old oil lease dated in 1983 in OK that my husband and I signed. Obviously the lease has no value now except that we have no knowledge of owning any mineral rights or land as described in the lease. Could the old lease be an indication that we should research any ownership we might currently have in those mineral rights? Thanks
Answer Yes, it appears that in 1983 when the lease was granted, your family owned an interest in the minerals. In order to determine if you currently own the interest, a mineral title examination should be done.
Depending on the size of the interest, you may wish to contact an Oil and Gas Attorney or a title abstractor to obtain this information for you.
