Question
My family has over 5,000 acres in an area of California where producing oil fields are in close proximity. I am not aware of the current technology currently available, but would we have been approached by an oil company if they thought there was oil on our property? I was also told that I can acquire seismic maps or other information that is currently available with regards to the property, would you know what information and where I can acquire it?

In answer to your question about whether you would have been contacted by an oil company if they were of the opinion that oil was located under your property - it is my opinion that you would have been sir.

If there are wells in close proximity to your land; and you own over 5000 acres of land, I would have to believe that you may not own the minerals, but only own the surface rights.  Have you been told that you were the mineral owner?  If so, another explanation would be that perhaps there is a 'geologic fault' which separates your property from the area with all the producing oil wells.
