I think you're looking for 'Soldier Boy' by the Shirelles.  I found it on youtube, you know, one of those ones where you watch the 45 vinyl version play on someone's turntable.  Ha!  Just like the old days!

other possibles: The Shirelles - Soldier Boy (1962) and The Six Teens - A Casual Look (1956) has a lyric "Oh soldier boy..."

He John,

Could it have been the Shirelles? There was another tune with military connects by a black group in my time, "Greetings, this is Uncle Sam...I'm gonna take you to a far off land..I want youuuu. yea..." If you were getting drafted, and I was, the song was a bummer, but true...who sang it please?
