Oldsmobile/Buick Repair - Olds Aurora half shaft

Expert: Gary Malone - 10/30/2009

Question
I have a 2001 Olds Aurora. I have had three steering half shaft replacements on this car and now it is creaking again. I just read that it can be disassembled and lubricated at a minimal cost rather than being replaced by a dealer . Is this true and can you give me details?  Also, is this creaking steering condition dangerous to drive with ? Could the steering lock up while driving ? Thanks for your help !  Cheers, Bruce Harlan

Answer
the steering shaft can be lubed gm sells a lube kit for these it comes with instructions it is a dealer item only it must be purchased at a gm dealership I think they are about 30 dollars. As for the danger (if it is steering shaft noise) there is little danger of it locking up but I would recommend lubing it just to be safe.
