Question
I will be in Dubai for a few days in transit to Kabul ... would like to visit Oman one day ... (1) how would I get back and forth to Oman for a one day visit? ... and (2) what would your recommend as "must see" in a one day visit to Oman?
Much thanks!!!

Answer
Given your time frame you would have to fly. It's a 45 minute flight each way from Dubai.  You have barely time to do much of anything, it's a shame you can't spend more time.  I would say if you can wangle two or three days you would be much better off. Ideally you need a couple of weeks.  I could keep you busy for six months...  But it is what it is and so I would suggest to rent a car and take a swing through the capitol area.  There are some pleasant neighborhoods in Shati al Qurum and Madinat al Sultan Qaboos.  Have lunch at the Intercon at Trader Vic's (my old hangout).  Visit the old souq in Mutrah.  Take a walk in Riyam park (the one with the huge white incense burner perched on a crag).  See the castles and forts in Old Muscat: Ala Alam Palace, Jalali Fort, Mirani Fort; see the Zubair Museum and the Gate house Museum (the one that stradles the highway as you enter into Muscat proper.  By all means go see the Al Bustan Palace Hotel and take a stroll on the beach.

If you had more time, take day trips to Nizwa, Nakhl and Rustaq to see the fortresses; also Al Hazm (outside of Rustaq).

Beyondthat you need more time.

Come back when you can stay awhile!

Regards,

Peachey
