Question Hi Peter,
Is it possible to do self-guided camping / wadi bashing trips in Oman by renting your own vehicle and carrying your own equipment?
Answer Hi Chris:
Answer to your question is "Maafih Mushkalah." Which is Arabic for No problem. You can rent vehicles from any of the reputable car hire companies. I reccommmend MARK Rentacar. You will find them in Hatat House near the Wadi Adai Roundabout just outside Ruwi on the Sultan Qaboos Highway. (Tel. (968) 562444).
Most of Oman is easily accessible with a four wheel drive and not many places are off limits. For instance, you will need to obtain permits to visit Saiq Plateau (Jebel Akhdar region). This can be done by booking roooms in advance at the only hotel up there.
Or if you want to observe the green turtle nesting in Ra's al Hadd, you will need to obtain permits. This you can do easily if you go through Desert Discovery at their Al Naseem Camp. You can reach them at (968) 593232.
