Question A friend of mine is writing a book. One of the characters has breast cancer...the story takes place in 1967. Would she have been treated with chemotherapy at that time causing hair loss? My friend thought that I (as a cancer survivor) might know this information. It seems to me that chemo was not being used at that time, only mastectomy and radiation, but I am definitely no expert.
Could you help me on this. When did chemotherapy become the treatment for breast cancer and what was being done in 1967?
Many thanks.
Answer No chemo therapy was NOT standard therapy for breast cancer in 1967 (I started in the business in 1969 and it was not standard therapy then either)! At that time only surgery & radiation therapy were standard therapies. Hormonal therapy and (experimental) chemo therapy only in very advanced cases then! I do hope this has been of help!
