Oncology (General Cancer) - high red blood cells count

Expert: Juliet Seigle, MD - 1/20/2008

Question
Hello Juliet and thank you for taking my question. My 35-year old son just had bloodwork done because he is on Lipitor for high cholesterol and needs periodic blood tests. They informed him his red blood cell count is "red flag high" and he has to go to a hematologist/oncologist. He also is having an ultrasound done in the upper stomach area, I believe, because he has had pain there and the Dr. seemed concerned after a thorough exam of that area. Needless to say, we are all very anxious and upset about this news. My question is why would he be recommended to see a cancer doctor? That is scary to us. My son is an auto mechanic, has been in the business for many years now and carbon monoxide poisoning was mentioned by the doctor, also. Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. June

Answer
Dear June,

A hematologist/oncologist does not only deal with cancer.  The
'hematology' part of the specialty concerns non-cancer causes of blood disorders.  If his red cell count is extremely high, this would be the most appropriate referral.  It is very important to find the most experienced specialist you have access to.

Sincerely,

J. Seigle, MD
