Oncology (General Cancer) - Melanoma

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 7/15/2008

Question
Hello. my name is Julia and i wanted to ask you some questions about my 83 years old grandmother.
3 years ago Doctors found Melanoma in an advanced stage on her right leg.
she had three surgeries and also radiations but without any results.the Melanoma was "stage 4".
A few days ago Doctors found out that the Melanoma had spread to the lungs (in the periphery).
It is very difficult for me to ask but -
1.how much time is left for my grandmother to live?
2.will it spread to other organs such as the liver or the head?
3. do we have a way to slower the cancer of being spread even more?
thank you very much, Julia.

Answer
1. It is unfortunately impossible to predict with any certainty. At her age some tumors sometimes grow very slowly. But that is not anything I can promise in her case. 2. That is unfortunately possible - but not sure. 3. Unfortunately not. Malignant melanoma is usually not very sensitive to radiation therapy and chemo therapy. Some promising and interesting experiments are going on with immuno therapy, but they are still experimental!
