Oncology (General Cancer) - Endometrial Cancer?

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 11/11/2009

Question
Hi Dr Nord!

I asked you a question last week but couldnt find it for reference.

A brief summary......I am 39, 2 children, still menstruating.

Noticed 2 years ago, periods went from 28 days to 21-24, sometimes
spotting on day 19, 20.

Had Endometrial Biopsy 11 mo's ago. Was negative but Dr mentioned something about hormones.

This past month I got my period on the 16 th day so i went back to GYN (A different one) because of insurance.

He ran bloodwork, all ok. Did a Transvaginal/abdominal UltraSound on my 7 day of my cycle. The Endometrial lining was 4mm.

He did a Sonohysterogram w/ saline on the 10th day of my cycle & Endometrial lining was 10 mm (1 cm).

He did a biopsy today.

My question is..........

1)IS The endometrial lining too thick? (An indication for cancer)? It seems to me that its suppose to thicken.

2)What is the normal thickness in a woman still menstrating?

3) Could there be any other reason, asside from cancer that would explain this extra thickness that prompted him to do a biopsy?

4) Can it still be hormonal, even though bloodwork was ok?

5) Could the prior biopsy have missed something?

Thank you SO much!  You're always a great help!

Answer
Much of this is something you must discuss with your gynecologist as it is outside my area of expertise here (ONLY cancer). Personally I doubt that this has anything to do with cancer. Biopsies were probably done just to be on the safe side and to check for some hormonal changes. 1. See above. 2. See above. 3. Yes see above. 4. Yes. 5. Possible but not that probable. To be completely sure a scraping is better! You are welcome.
