Oncology (General Cancer) - Endometrial biopsy?

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 11/5/2009

Question
Hi Dr Nordquist,

I hope you are doing well.

Id like to ask you a question.

2 Years or so, ago, I noticed that I was spotting during intercourse. Some time after that, I realized my periods were coming every 21-25 days as opposed to every 28 days. Sometimes spotting previous to my period, on days 18, 19 & 20.

I went to the GYN last year & he did a Endometrial biopsy. It was negative.

This past month, I got my period (Or started bleeding) just 15 days after my last period. I went to different GYN (Because of insurance purposes) & he wanted to do a D & C hysteroscopy. He did an ultrasound which did not show anything unremarkable. I thought a D&C might be a little harsh so I seeked out another oppinion.

The 2nd oppinion gyn wants to do a sonohystergram AND another endometrial biopsy. I think this seems logical.

My question is:

1) If I had a negative biopsy 11 months ago & this should happen to be cancer, would it be caught early? (Being I did have a biopsy just about 1 year ago )......

I am 39 years old, 2 children, not high risk but seem to have the symptoms.

I guess I was surprised that the GYN wants another biopsy as I was expecting him to say, ok, you already had one & we can rule it out. It was only 11 months ago.

Thx for your advice!
Rachel

Answer
Life is full of surprises and things do change over time. Your cancer risk is probably not high but it is not 0. If there is one there it is probably not an advanced one, so rather early. I suppose he/she has also checked your cervix uteri with pap smears and a colposcopy?
