Oncology (General Cancer) - Stage 4 cancer

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 11/2/2009

Question
My mother is in the hospital and they say they are 80% sure she has stage 4 cancer, in her lungs, spleen, and stomach. She also has pneumonia. I know they still need to do more testing to determine the actutal location of the cancer. What is the best treatment do you think? I know stomach cancer is bad on its own, but with these all combined what do you think are her chances of surviving this? I have worked  in the medical field for many years and have seen many people with many diseases but this is my mother and I need to be prepared.
Thanks for your time and what ever advise you can give me.
Dusti McLemore

Answer
I'm very sorry to read about her - and your - problems! Since her cancer has spread to all these sites it is indeed a stage 4 cancer and as such at present unfortunately incurable. You are right. Advanced stomach cancer has indeed a very bad prognosis unfortunately. That it now also is a stage 4 cancer does not make it any better. So unfortunately her chances are very small if at all existing. That is of course if her diagnosis is correct. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you! Please do keep me posted!
