I was diagnosed with stage 1 testicular cancer in March 2008. The infected testicle was removed that month. Since then, I have been going for 3 monthly CT scans and tumour marker blood tests. For the first year post surgery, all tests where good - tumuor markers normal range and ct scan clear. However, in the last 2 ct scans, the doctor has noted 2 mildly-enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes in the lower right region. These nodes remained the same size in the last 2 tests (3 month period), all blood tests where normal. My urologist is not concerned as he feels they are unrelated and I should just continue with the 3 monthly ct scans. Do you think these nodes are related to my testicular cancer, and should I be concerned? I do suffer from IBS, is there a posible link between IBS and enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes?
Answer Your question confuses me somewhat. You have written stage II (2) in your headline, but in your question you wrote stage 1. I suppose that with IBS you mean irritable bowel syndrome? If your cancer truly was a stage 1 and your tumour markers are normal then it is probable (but not sure) that your dr. is right. Testicular cancers normally spread to lymph nodes BEHIND the abdominal cavity not inside it too. Even so I would suggest a PET scan to see if there is any tumour like activity in those abdominal lymph nodes. Was ever any post surgical chemotherapy or radiation therapy discussed? What kind of testicular cancer was it? I'm not an expert of IBS, so I'm not sure of those lymph nodes, but it is a functional illness not an inflammatory. If it had been inflammatory such lymph nodes would be probable. However enlarged lymph nodes there are not uncommon. Please do keep me posted!
