Question I am a PhD nuclear engineer/scientist, exposed to high dose(neutron) radiation from research reactors and spent fuel dumps from navy nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers and Nevada nuclear testing site, USA for the Dept. of Energy(DOE)at Idaho National Engineering Laboratory(INL)during the Cold War period(11/1/76-1/6/78). This was one of top secrets one must not tell even to his spouse then. I left INL very sick. I suffered diarrhea, colorectal pain/bleeding, requiring enema every 3 to 4 hours, decay/loss of teeth in acid reflux from nausea/vomiting, a bunch of sessile polyps removed in 1996,radiation-related left bundle branch block(heart condition) was confirmed by testing 2002, 2005 and 2007, deteriorating eyesight and ptosis(ptosis, cataract and RK surgery), lesions(lumps) developed on chest, tongue, right ankle and left thigh and removed surgically and depression. I was forced to retire for disability in January 2000 from US Nuclear Regulatory Commission(NRC) with a promise of Workers' Compensation when I started my conspicuous latent symptoms of radiation exposure/illness since late 1980s, then, it was denied after my retirement in July 2000. On 4/25/2002, Prof./Dr. Ernest J. Sternglass, PhD and Director of Radiological Physics at the University of Piitsburgh Medical School said reviewed all my medical files/history and said, "Your symptoms are signs of a radiation victim. See a radiation specialist." All American doctors at 10 major medical centers in USA: Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, UCLA, GWU, Georgetown, NIH, Bethesda-Naval Hospital and Veterans Hospital declined to see me in 2002.I calledDr. Sternglass and he said, "I am not surprised to hear what you said. When I helped radiation victims like you at Rocky Flats, I was subjected to IRS tax audits and Government research fund cutoff." He mailed a copy of his recent papers on radiation effects on human health with lists of foreign doctors. I made a copy of them at National Library of Medicine/NIH. I e-mailed SOS to doctors in Germany, Sweden, UK and Japan... German doctors asked me for a complete dose records for a Chromosome aberration study of my blood cells to determine the amount and damage of radiation on my body. US Government denied my radiation records and I had to give up. I always thought that my radiation exposure was from the low dose radiation from commerical reactors at the TMI reactor accident site and 21 nukes until I received a USW(United Steel Workers' Union)' letter dated Dec 2006 and received 1/3/2007. I see 4,729 EEOICP claims were made from my co-workers at INL as of 1/1/2008 and 5,360 as of 5/17/2009 at INL. The number of claimants is increasing 1 or 2 daily according to the US Dept. of Labor/EEOICP statistics on the Internet. Now, I just got a letter last Saturday(6/13/09) that my illness is not due to radiation and/or chemicals according to the DOL examiners to deny my radiation claims. After the 60 years old US Policy since 1945 on radiation victims, all of American doctors declined to see me fearing retaliation of the US Government or I cannot expect an honest medical opinion from them. Furthermore, they are not paid for the research time, diagnosis and writing opinions. I was 34 in 1976. Now, I turned 67 on 5/7/2009. I briefly met Dr. Lars-Erik Holm, MD and General Director of Swedish Radiation Protection Authority at 2006 OECD MEA/ICRP International Conference held in Rockville,MD on 8/29/06. Can you help me by diagnosis and testing of me in Sweden? If yes, I will ask DOL/EEOICP whether they will accept the honest results from you before I fly to see you. America is a great country, but not a perfect country. Due process on radiation victims is not working as it should in America. I worked hard for the defense of the USA, my adapted country. I find that all of my co-workers at INL retired and most of them already died. Most of 4,729 EEOICP claims as of 1/1/08 were made by their survivors(wives, children). Radiation sickness is very similar to the victims of Agent Orange or Gulf War Syndrome from the Wars in Vietnam or Gulf War in Iraq in1990. I trust God will be with me at this most difficult time of my life.I presented Paper: The Plight of American Radiation Victims held at the International NPA Conference held on 5/23/07 in Storrs, CT, USA. May I hear from you as soon as possible? Tks.
Answer I would like to help you but I'm myself retired after a stroke 6.5 years ago and I have just had radiation treatment for a prostate cancer. I also have to inform you that all medical investigations here would be billed to you since you are not living here and they would not be cheap. As far as I know Dr Holm has left the Radiation Authority and is now head of the National Medical Board. However I'll give you one person to call and discuss this with and that is Professor Dr. Edward Baral, M.D., Ph.D. Dr Baral lives part time with his wife in San Francisco, Californa and is then working as a medical oncologist and radiation therapist at Stanford. Part time he works here in Stockholm, Sweden at the Department of Medical Oncology & Radiation Therapy at the Radiumhemmet of the Karolinska University Hospital/Royal Karolinska Institute Medical School. Previously he worked as a professor and head of the department (oncology & radiation therapy) of the University of Mannitoba, Canada. He and his wife are here now and will remain here until - I think - some time in September. He has an apartment here too. Dr. Baral and I have known each other for more than 35 years since we both were very junior drs. at the Radiumhemmet - and where I'm now a patient. Please remember that Stockholm is 6 hours ahead of you. I can hardly give you his e-mail address but his fax no. is +46-8-51775196 where 46 is the country code for Sweden and 8 is the area code for Stockholm. The phone no. to the hospital exchange is +46-8-51770000. I'll send him an e-mail reporting to him what I have suggested that you should do. Edward is a nice guy with a wicked sense of humour (he told my wife that I have always been a "bad boy"!). Good luck!
I have received a reply by e-mail from Dr. Baral. He is away to the U.S. for the moment. He will be back within a week or so and will check your question then. I sent it to him by e-mail. He will probably also try to contact Dr. Holm.
Thanks. The phone no. is to the hospital's phone exchange here. I can not give you his personal phone numbers for obvious reasons. Fax him first in a week or so when he is back here. Where he is in the US right now I do not know. He is there on business for the clinic here so he may be anywhere there. I will also talk to hbim when he is back here.
