Oncology (General Cancer) - leukemia

Expert: Meir Wetzler M. D. - 6/11/2009

Question
Hi, hope you can help even though my question is about a
dog. My 8 year old golden retriever has just been diagnosed
with leukemia and I was just wanted to know how this
disease starts. What causes it? Is it just bad luck or can
it be prevented? Many thanks, Leigh.

Answer
Dear Leigh,
I'm sorry to hear about your dog. We do not know how to prevent this disease. In humans, exposure to benzene and smoking are associated with development of leukemia but we don't have this information for dogs.
Should you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely, Meir.
