Oncology (General Cancer) - marginal zone lymphoma B cell

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 6/2/2009

Question
QUESTION: AT FIRST THEY TOLD MY HUSBAND HE HAD NODAL MARGINAL ZONE
LYMPHOMA
AND THEN HE GOT ANOTHER LYMPH NODE AND THEY SAID HE HAD DIFFUSE
FAST GROWING AND  THEY GAVE HIM CHOP AND RITUXAN AND HE WAS IN
REMISSION  FOR FIVE MONTHS.   HE GOT ANOTHER LYMTH NODE WHICH
THEY REMOVED AND TOLD HIM HE HAD  MARGINAL ZONE LYMPHOMA AND
GAVE HIM 4 TREATMENTS OF RITUXAN AND HE GOES BACK JUNE 11TH FOR A
PET SCAN.  WE ARE CONFUSED WITH TELLING US HE HAS SO  MANY DIFFERENT
KINDS.  IS THIS UNUSAL TO HAVE SO MANY DIFFERENT KINDS?

ANSWER: He has a lymphoma all right but different lymph nodes may show somewhat different pictures. Such things do happen in some cases. Treatment should be guided by the worst picture.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Dr. Nordquist,
I don't understand this lymphoma.  Do you mean he should be treated for the
worst lymphoma which I guess would  be diffuse which they told us was fast
growing.  But last time he took that PET scan she said she had good news it was
marginal zone B cell. I am so confused.  Is any curable?

Answer
It may be curable but I can not promise anything. I'm sure his treatment has already been guided by this principle. This is not that uncommon in tumor cases! A PET scan can show us locations with high (= cancer suspect local activity. It can NOT provide us with a histo-pathological diagnosis. Only a pathology report can. Please let me read the pathology reports! You can copy them here.
