Oncology (General Cancer) - spinal cancer

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 6/3/2009

Question
QUESTION: my dad 70 years old was diagnosed w/stage4 (matastisized)spinal cancer in april and was in denial till the end of may when he really didn't have much choice because of the pain to have the cyberknife done(six days ago).he has not had any releif from the pain and is more or less bed struck!the doctor that heads the ck here had said he should feel alot of relief within three days, which didn't happen and now were not getting any answers good or bad.i guess i just waqnt to know what the general outcomes of patients in this condition are.

ANSWER: If this is a stage 4 cancer that has spread to his spine from elsewhere (from where?) he is indeed a stage 4 cancer case with a very bad prognosis. Stage 4 cancers are at present incurable. His CyberKnife treatment must be considered a palliative treatment to relieve his symptoms to some extent and temporarily. If it has not given any help by now it has probably failed. To be able to tell you more I need to know at least where his cancer originated and what type of cancer it is.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: he had stage four lung cancer to begin with.he went to mayo clinic and had the right upper, half the middle six limpnodes and part of his esophagus removed in july 2008.he is also taking diazepam(valium),methocarbam(robaxin),gabapentin(neurontin),hydroco/apap10(lorcet)and warfarin for his blood.he is very weak,in and out of cohearancy.the doc. here also told us the ck would kill the cancer on his spine.

Answer
OK, so this is a stage 4 lung cancer that has spread to his spine and then has been given radiation therapy locally there. No chemotherapy? Lung cancers practically all have a very bad prognosis. The fact that it already is a stage 4 tumor does not make it better - actually the opposite. So unfortunately I have no options to offer here. I'm sorry I have nothing better to tell you!
