Oncology (General Cancer) - sqaumous cell carcinoma and cord blood

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 6/1/2009

Question
Hello Dr Nordquist,
My 64 yr old father was diagnosed with stage 4b sqaumous cell carcinoma in the Fall of 2005. He did chemo, radiation and agressive double radiation therapy and has been given a clean bill of health thus far. I am expecting my first child in September and I was not considering banking the cord blood, however, wondered if my father's cancer were to come back if the cord blood could be of value to him. Can you let me know your thoughts on this?
Thanks!
julie

Answer
Dear Julie, if your father's cancer in the fall of 2005 was diagnosed as a stage 4b cancer it would be IMPOSSIBLE to give him a "clean bill of health" since all stage 4 cancers at present are incurable - though in many cases controllable. Where did his cancer originate? At present I doubt that that kind of blood would be of use. But such things may change so keep it!
