Oncology (General Cancer) - stomach polyps

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 6/25/2009

Question
My son is 52 years of age.  He recently had a biopsy to determine if polyps removed from his stomach are cancerous or benign.  The dr.told him his stomach is loaded with polyps and cannot remove the polyps without removing his stomach.  A friend recommended me to tell him about a test called elissa or elisa test which she took and it recommended a diet for her.  She claims she is polyps free now...it took about 3 yrs to clear her body of polyps.  Do you feel this would help my son and who should he ask for this test.  What can he do to alleviate this problem.  I am anxious for any help I can relay to him.  Thank you.
        Sally

Answer
If what he has is indeed a case of true polyps I doubt that any elisa test or any diet would be of any value to him. If he is a case of genetic gastric polyposis which seems reasonable to suspect then he has a big risk of sooner or later developing a gastric cancer and he has to discuss with a gastroenterologist if he should have most or all of his stomach removed surgically in order to avoid that. He should also have his colon checked since this condition often runs together with polyposis coli with a high risk of colon cancer.
