Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 7/5/2009

Question
5 days ago i was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, superficial spreading type. the breslow thickness is at 2.5mm. clarks level iv. ulceration was present. horizontal and vertical growth phase are present. tumor infiltration lymphocytes: brisk. the mole was located on my mid upper back. i am suppose to meet with the surgeon next week for a re-excision i guess. i have been reading alot about this but i am a little confused because i am not sure if it is in my lympnodes or any organs. what is the prognosis for this? and what should i expect next?
                                       thank you,

Answer
How big was your mole on the surface of your skin? It seems to be rather serious though. Yes more extensive surgery is necessary. No one can know right now based only on this if it is in any lymph nodes or in other places. Must be investigated. I have right now not enough information to give you any kind of precise prognosis. But malignant melanomas are always serious matters. Your case needs to be investigated more. Discuss the planning for that with your dr.
