Oncology (General Cancer) - Neck problems

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 7/7/2009

Question
I have been complaining of pressure on the left side of my neck x 2 years. I sometimes choke on my saliva while awake and have problems initiating my swallowing. My Drs keep blaming it on GERD, which has been under control since diet changes and medications. The sensation never goes away. I was found to have two small thyroid nodules that have grown a little over the past year. I recently had a CT scan that states "multiple prominent bilateral internal jugular chain lymph nodes". I have had the CT and US of the neck with the findings listed above. Do I need to be concerned? No one has been able to diagnose what is wrong with me and tell me I should not worry.

Answer
Both your lymph nodes and your thyroid nodules can be checked by needle biopsies (by for example ultrasound guidance) in order to diagnose what they are. If they however have anything to do with your symptoms though is most uncertain. Those seem more to have to do with neck muscle tension which may be a stress phenomenon.
