Oncology (General Cancer) - brothers melanoma spread to spleen and brain

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 7/10/2009

Question
Hi Dr Claes,Firstly I am very pleased to hear that your radiation was a success, makes me happy to hear these things, thats really great. I am South African but been living in Portugal for the last 26 years so my english at times isnt that good. I ask you all these questions as I dont think the doctors are telling my mother everything about my brother. His hair started falling out this week, also he keeps on telling my mom what hes going to do next year when hes recovered. He reckons he doesnt sleep. Dr Claes how long would you say he still has to live? Please if you have the time when you answer tell me ALL you can about his type of cancer. Thanks once again.
Best regards
Caron
Have a good weekend

Answer
I have not found anything wrong with your English so far - it is certainly better than mine since English has never been a "native" language of mine. I started to study it at the age of 11 years in 1956. OK I studied it for 9 years and have used it extensively since then but it is still not a mother language of mine. My mother language is Swedish. I also studied Norwegian & Danish at school together with Swedish and as a child living some periods of my early life in Helsinki, Finland, I was also exposed to and learned Finnish, though unfortunately I have forgotten most (though not all) of it. Contrary to Norwegian & Danish it is very different from Swedish - as different as Japanese in fact - which (Swedish) is also close to English, German & Dutch and therefore also to Afrikaans. I also studied German for 7 years at school and French for 4. But those 2 languages are now unfortunately very rusty, especially French due to lack of use. Thank you - believe me I'm pleased too! I do appreciate your concern! Since he has received radiation therapy to his head it is normal that his hair is falling off temporarily. Unfortunately in this situation his remaining survival time can probably be measured at most in some months - though it may be quite shorter - certainly not in years. If you know that his melanoma has spread to his spleen that may be the cause for the abdominal symptoms you told me about earlier. How come you ended up in Portugal? I'm sorry I do not have better information for you! best regards! Claes P.S. Thanks! You too! C.
