I am just following up on the earlier messages about supernumeraries. I couldn't copy and paste the text from that article, but I was able to take a screencap and upload it to a viewing website. You can see the paragraph in question as the second last to the bottom-right.

ANSWER: Thanks! The risk increase he discusses is between the risk in "normal" males and in supernumerary males. There is such a risk increase in THIS material and that is as big as the value you ask. BUT 1. That is in this study , much more work is needed until we can be sure that this is the regular value. 2. A risk increase of around 30% may seem big but keep in mind that the actual normal testicular cancer risk is very small. So even with an increase of 30% it is still very small. Good luck!

QUESTION: If the average risk is about 1/200 for getting TC, which apparently it is, a 31% increase would mean 31/200 right? Then that would mean my actual risk is around 1/5...not even taking in to account all this fluoroscopy n had.

Or am I calculating this wrong?

ANSWER: Yes you are wrong. The risk increase is calculated as roughly 32% of the orgininal risk which itself is a percentage. You put the original risk as 1/200 = half a percent = 0.005. So the total risk of that value including the risk increase is 1.32 x 0.005 = 0.0066. So not that much bigger than the original value of 0.005! OK? The reason is that the risk increase is a percentage of a percentage so it is very small.

QUESTION: Okay thanks! Seriously last question, though. I promise.

Wouldn't half a percent be represented as 0.5? Why is it like 0.005? How does that translate in to the 1/200 thing?

! percent is one hundredth of something. 1 is 1, one tenth of something is 0.1. One hundredth of something is 0.01. No 0.5 is 50% (5 tenths of something) so half a percent must be 0.005. All this is very basic arithmatic and thus VERY basic mathematics. 1/200 is half a percent or strictly half of one percent since 1/2 IS half and 1/100 is one hundredth = 1 percent. There are 100 cents to a dollar so one cent is one hundredth of one dollar or 1/100 \$ or 0.01 \$. 1/100 & 0.01 are only 2 different ways of writing the same thing. Did you not do fractions in mathematics? Sorry, but this now starts to become quite tedious. Your risk is quite small even if you are supernumerary and that is the important thing! Good luck!
