Oncology (General Cancer) - lung cancer

Expert: Claes-Gustaf Nordquist, M.D. - 4/22/2004

Question
I have not been diagnosed but fear I may have lung cancer because of the sudden onset of some strange events this week.  The most noted problem I am having is that I have a knot in my back on the left side mainly, some to the right between my shoulder blades.  Since the onset of these symptoms I have had unbelievable burning and tingling in both arms and legs.  The pain in my legs has caused me to collapse when I stand.  My legs begin to burn tremendously and then feel like they are hardening.  It's hard to describe.  Then I lose myself and crumple to the floor.  I have begun taking vioxx my physician prescribed due to back pain that deals with injury to my tailbone and a diagnosis of spina bifida occulta.  I have always had low back pain but this time it's different.  I have a cough but have attributed that to the pollen in the air.  I have asthma and am a smoker.  I would like to present my thought and get your thoughts.  I have a fear that I have a tumor on my spine from my lungs pressing on nerves causing all of the tingling and burning in the extremities.  Is this an occurence that can happen?

I will also state that I have contacted my physician and will be getting a referral to a neurologist although this cannot come quick enough to ease my mind.  I'm a 37 year old mother of three and am terrified that I will be leaving my children behind.  Can you please help me?

Thank you.

Answer
Well, I can not from here tell you what you have but lung cancer is not the first thing that comes to my mind! However you are doing the right thing by going to a dr. because without an examination we will get nowhere! A thourough medical examination is very important! Finally a piece of advice you have probably heard before but which I will nevertheless repeat. If you are this scared of lung cancer why do you smoke?! STOP smoking ASAP!! Good luck!

P.S. Your asthma makes it even more important that you stop smoking!
