Question Just a follow up Dr. Hammoudi...I am taking seroquel for sleep...and I read on the internet that it can cause weight increase. Since I gained some weight back (about 5%) AND I have started to have backaches in the lower to mid back (not really backaches but a muscle tightness that I can feel) I wondered can the seroquel be masking a cancer?

Hello Dr. Hammoudi, I have a question regarding unexpected weight loss. I was a solid 192 for 9-12 months, then in 6 weeks went down to 181 in May of 2004. I stayed at 181, except for 1 time dipping down to 179. I thought I had Pancreatic Cancer (PC) and got a Abdominal Ultrasound, Cat Scan, and Thyroid Scan. All negative. I cant seem to put any weight back on except when I eat a LOT more, and slow down or stop exercising. Is this the type of unexpected weight loss associated with early cancer? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

in early cancer you do not have weigh loss , it started when you are in advanced stage, and if it was the case with you you will not at this weigh for over 3 months, but the loss of weight will be constant.
so I think that your weight loss is caused by exercise and weight control [diet] or hyperthyroidism and for this you need to check your hormones [thyroids that is].
so so far unless there is specific symptoms and constant weight loss even if you eat a lot , with thyroid hormone normal then I'll be questionning you further.
the age factor also is important and it seems that you are young.
So overall I do not think that you need to worry about early cancer
thanks

Answer no I do not think so, when you have advanced cancer no medicine will get you weight gain unless you have edemas or ascites
but since you are so scare about this cancer thing, do tumoral markers for all type of cancer, to have piece of mind since all the xray , ct and other are normal
thanks
