How to Have an Online Relationship - long distance internet love

Expert: vanessaoz - 10/6/2009

Question
I have known my boyfriend for 7 years of those 7 we have been dating for the past 3. The thing is that we meet through the internet now one of experts on your site that I asked a question to, told me to break up and start having a real relationship with some one I see daily. And that makes me angry, I know its not the traditional way of meeting people but it worked for us. We have talked every single day by phone for at least 2 hrs every night and text message back and forth during the day for 3 years now. We try to see each other as much as possible but with our schools being so far apart it doesn't happen much besides every 3-4 months. On top of that we also communicate by web-cam nightly. I love him with all my heart and I know he feels the same about me. We've both agreed that this long distance relationship will only continue for the next 2-3 years since by that time I'll be done with Med School and he'll have his MBA. I know what people feel about an internet relationship/ long distance sometimes I feel a little bit of shame over it and sometimes others get me to think that it wont last long.

Answer
hi jannie,

thanks for your email..

dont let anyone make you fee shameful for having an online loving relationship. ive known many to work out and the couples marry and be very happy. i hate it myself when ive made feel exactly the way you are made to feel.

just because you not actually meeting in real everyday, the feelings you have are very real and to me is no different to off line relationships, most couples dont meet daily offline anyway and most dont have the communication that you have online. i was in a relationship online for 6 years until my love died from illness. 2 years on, im not over it, dont know if i ever will be, what we had was real as any love i could have offline if not more because of the time we spent together. it was magical. i so know how you feel.

your both doing the right thing and if it doesnt work out then you will have to deal with it when it happens, but dont give up on what seems to be a loving relationship because of what others think. finish your schooling and one day im sure you both will  have a lovely future togethers. keep up the communication and keep loving each other.

good luck
