I have experience with online relationships and having friends who are in one or have had them, I know the highs and lows that can come from being in one, especially long distance. I have been online for five years and met many people from different cultures.

How to Have an Online Relationship - 4-year age difference. Potential legal issues?

Expert: vanessaoz - 7/14/2009

Question
So while playing an online multiplayer game, I struck up a friendly conversation with a fellow online player who so happened to be a female. The conversation was nice and she told me her name and we added each other on messenger.
I come to find out that she's an incredible person who shares many of my same interests and after a while, she opened up and confessed her love me. I had to admit to her that i have feelings for her, too.
So we love each for a while, but then she starts to become very... very affectionate. (to the point that i'm now concerned with legal issues).
Here's where the problem lies: I am 18. She, as I later found out, is 14.
Help please?

Answer
hi austin,

thanks for your email....

i will let you know that i am australian and i dont know the laws in USA as far as consenting adults go but i do beleive in some states it is 18.

now in saying that, there is no law as far as i know that stops both of you having feelings for each other, you just cant act upon those feelings at the moment.

if your worried about losing her as a friend then explain to her your concerns and spend the time with her developing your relationship until she is a consenting adult.

i would hope she would respect the fact that you do respect her and aware of her age and there is a limit to what you both can do. there are so many other ways to show each other how you feel. complimenting her on what is doing and being there for one another during the good and bad times, supporting each other and generally caring for one another.

four years is not much of an age difference as you both get older. when she is 18 and you are 22, you will have built a friendship based on caring and sharing, which is a wonderful platform to develop a lasting relationship on.

hope this helps
take care
