Question Hi, I have an 30's yr old sister who dated a man online for about 2 yrs. He is in his late 40's. He told my sister that he does not have any family nor being married. In more than a year, she has been sending money to support him (he claims that he lost his job and is currently going back to school for a new career). Recently, I did online background search on the guy and found out that he is married and has two children. After showing my sister the evident, she has stopped sending money to him and I found out that in a period of 1 and half year she has wired transferred about 60K$ to his account. Of course, she does not have any evident that he borrowed her nor any promisory note. Since, she stopped sending him the money, he has made excuse and stop communiation with her. Could you please give some advice to my sister as how to get back this money and is there any legal avenue to take against this man? Most of her communication with this guy is through Yahoo IM. Please help. Thank you in advance
Answer Hi Tom,
I am sorry to hear this scumbag took advantage of your sister's kindness.
There is a web site, http://www.ic3.gov that has information on how to file a complaint when a person is scammed for money over the Internet. Form IC3, Internet Crime Complaint Center, is shown and a step-by-step process to be followed. I also recommend she contact her local police department and file a formal/written complaint. If she has copies of their chats, the name and address of the bank where she wired the funds should all be made available to the police department. Also, I would make sure your sister keep a copy of all of this information for future reference in case she is asked for it.
