Question
I've been chatting with an on-line Internet friend for about 2 months now. He lives in Africa and says he's a engineer. Just recently, he told me he has a family emergency and that his mother is dying from some weird disease and he wants to know if I could let him borrow $1700 to help pay for his mother getting better health care. How do I determine if this guy's the real deal or as been a fake all along?

Answer
Hi Susan,

Unfortunately, this person is a scammer!  There are several red flags:

For the most part, scammers live in Africa, Russia and the UK.  However, there are scammers throughout the United States as well.

A "normal" person does not ask someone that they have known for two months via the Internet and have never met in person to "lend" them money.

Most scammers prey on a person's emotions; in this case, he has a sick Mother.
