Question
Hello:
I have had a piece published in the college paper and notice that they put the piece online for a month with advertisements next to it, meaning someone is making money.  I also had the piece in a UK magazine with them putting big paying advertisment next to it. I wasn't paid, but how can I make money off the piece? How can I put it up and attract advertisers? (Maybe that it has already been online with advertisers helps?)

Answer
Unless you specify that you piece cannot be used to generate revenue when you submit it, papers, websites, and magazines can use it to generate money. If you do that, your piece will most likely not be published. These places exist on their ad revenue.

The way to make money from a piece that your write is to include a link to your own website that also has advertisements on it. Most papers, magazines, and websites don't object to this. It's only fair. Unless you are paid by the places that you are submitting your pieces to as a writer, this is the only way to do it.

Once you have a website you can sign up for publishers programs from places like http://chitika.com/mm_overview.php?refid=websmith and they will pay you when someone clicks on an ad. Other places like http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=E0EXt2NZbNQ&offerid=7097&type=3&subi... will pay you when someone buys a product.

This is an example of how to monetize articles on your own website.
