Opera - Attire for a classical solo

Expert: Gisele Afeche - 10/5/2008

Question
Good evening Gisele,
I will be singing a classical piece ("Caro mio ben") and a Christmas Carol (sung in bel canto style) as part of a little concert held in a coffee shop. The concert takes place in the evening.
Please advice on the attire I should be wearing - will an elegant skirt and blouse be enough or should i go for an evening dress?
This is my first public solo and I want to make a very good impression.
Thank you so much! Your time is highly appreciated.
Kindest Regards,
Patricia

Answer
Dear Patricia

It all depends on the venue. If it is a quite informal cafe, a smart skirt and blouse or a nice dress (not prom type dress) will be enough, otherwise it won't look appropriate for the space. If it was a very formal dinner in a room or restaurant, that would be different.

You can look very smart in a lovely dress or blouse and skirt, think of what you would wear for a quite formal party or a Xmas dinner. Smart but not gala.

Hope I helped.

All the best and good luck for your performance.

Gisele
