AboutPamela Thomas Expertise Questions on Opera performance, repertoire, vocal technique, acting for opera. I have some 20 years experience in opera in both leading roles and chorus. I have sung with New York City Opera since 1981. I have studied voice in NYC for over 20 years and have also taught technique and coached singers in acting.
Question Hi, I am in an UNDERGRADUATE vocal performance program at a Western University. I plan to continue my education either at a Graduate or Young Artist Program. HOW important is it to have opera/stage experience prior to entering into such programs??? I am thinking of programs such as Eastman,Mannes, Merola,
Boston Conservatory....Do you have any information on this issue.
Sincerely and thank you
Thanks for your help
Answer Hi Paula,
Of course it would help if you have performance experience, but the most important thing, of course, is how you sing - how good your voice is, how musical you are, how your languages are, etc.
Eastman doesn't have a graduate program - But there are many wonderful schools. If you are looking at Mannes you should also look at Manhattan School of Music as well. Juilliard is harder to get in, especially if you are a soprano.
Also - if you go to www.classicalsinger.com - it's a great website for singers in any case, but they also have done a survey of music schools in the US and Canada - if you go to the left and click on University Vocal Programs - search for your area or whatever you are interested in - they have details of all the programs. Also, don't forget, these schools have websites and they have the audition requirements, degree requirements, financial aid, etc.
There are so many good schools - I'm sure you will get an opportunity to sing. The best known schools will have the most competition, of course. And if you have some schools you what to investigate - give them a call. I'm sure they will be able to refer you to someone who can help you. But I think you'll find a lot of info on the website.
