Is there ever a time an artist can use there own designer regarding a costume in an opera?
Thank you,
Maureen
Answer Hi Maureen,
These days, I would say no because the designers have a lot of power and usually design the production and costumes together. Of course, I would imagine that the big stars (and perhaps not so big stars) would have discussions with the designer to make sure they feel comfortable in the costume.
In the old days, I believe the stars had a much bigger say. I remember a story that Beverly Sills told about her debut at La Scala. She said that people kept talking about how she wasn't a diva - that is she was reasonable, a good colleague and performer and was pretty easy-going. She has a costume that she wanted them to make changes on and she politely told them what she wanted. Well, they didn't do it and she asked again. When it still wasn't done, she said she took sissors and cut up the dress - "now, you can fix it the way I want it" (or words to that effect. So she got the design she wanted and also showed to the Italians that she had the "diva" spirit.
When I did one of the daughters in Ahknaten at NY City Opera, I asked for a change in the costume and they made it. It didn't change the basic design of the costume but it was adjusted for me so I felt comfortable in the design.
So, I'm pretty sure that the big stars have some input - but I don't believe now they can design their own costumes.. I could be wrong - but to my knowledge, those days are past.
