Opera - Bearing a child

Expert: Pamela Thomas - 8/21/2008

Question
Does bearing a child always negatively affect an opera singer's voice?

Answer
Hi Andrea,

I don't believe so.  I know many women who have had children - and they sing even better.  I think the key thing is that one has to not start singing too soon after having the baby.  Many women say their breathing improved when they were pregnant!

I do think that having children can certainly interfere with the single-mindedness and concentration needed to have a career... (not enough sleep, etc.)  But all things can be overcome.  You have to do what your heart says... but physically it should not interfere with the voice as long as you don't overdo...

Hope that helps,

Pamela
