AboutPamela Thomas Expertise Questions on Opera performance, repertoire, vocal technique, acting for opera. I have some 20 years experience in opera in both leading roles and chorus. I have sung with New York City Opera since 1981. I have studied voice in NYC for over 20 years and have also taught technique and coached singers in acting.
Question As a soprano, I am most comfortable singing classical music such as hymns, etc. My high notes are strong, easy and free. When I get into my middle voice, my larnyx practically disappears and I feel a lot of tension in my throat. Please forgive me for my lack of knowledge and terminology.
Can you recommend any warm ups or exercises to help with this?
Thank you for your time!
Answer Hi Gina,
It's hard for me to exactly understand what you are saying - usually the larynx lifts (inappropriately) on the high notes - not on the middle.
Are you working with a teacher? That would be the best thing for you - that way you could learn the terminology and also he/she could see what you are doing to create the tension.
Meanwhile - make sure you are supporting the sound with the breath. And keep the larynx down (if you yawn you will feel it lower).. make sure you jaw if relaxed as well.
as you sing gently move your jaw back and forth just a bit with your hands. If that is hard to do then you have too much tension in your jaw....
But really, if you can, try to find a good teacher and take (at least) a few lessons.
