QUESTION: 1) I am 32 and I am studying voice. Does anyone ever break into the Opera scene (like bigger roles besides chorus) at a later stage of life. (I have sang chorus for years)

2) Lastly, do you know a good school where I could study and get a doctorate in voice in New York (Besides Julliard of course)

ANSWER: Hi Frederick,

I think men have a better chance to succeed at a later age - just because there aren't as many men singing.  32 might be considered "old" by some but if you really sing well - then, no.

Manhattan School of Music and Mannes School of Music, both in New York City, are excellent schools with really good opera programs.  I would visit their websites where you can read more about them.

QUESTION: What exactly is a Professional Studies certificate? In a few years, I would like to continue my studies at Manhattan school of music. That being said, they offer this "professional studies program" and I was curious if this program certifies you to sing Opera? In short, what is this degree about.

ANSWER: Hi Frederick,

If you go to the Manhattan School of Music website - http://www.msmnyc.edu/pscert/
you can read about the professional studies program.  I think, however, you need to have a Masters degree to get in.  Of course, MSM offers a Masters and Doctor in Voice as well.

If you go to the Mannes website:  http://www.newschool.edu/Mannes/subpage.aspx?id=2766
also talks about their degrees.  They also offer a Masters and Professional Studies - but their Studies degree is 2 years and doesn't require a Masters.

You will have to audition for either school to be admitted, of course.  But both programs are highly professional and you would learn so much!

QUESTION: One last question:
 I would like to know if PAY TO SING (YAP's) are as good or as noticed as one;s that you get it without having to pay? Meaning, are these programs looked at in a positive light if you were to audition for a company after completing the program?

Hi Frederick,

I'm not sure about the YAPs.  I suppose there are good ones and bad ones but I'm not familiar enough to comment.  If the program is a good one, run well and not too expensive and you get a lot out of it perhaps it would help.

The bottom line about auditions is that you have to really be ready to sing professionally and sing well.  They are looking for good/great voices, good acting, good presence and experience (hard to get if you're just starting).
